An Egyptian criminal court on Sunday sentenced Egypt’s antiquities minister, Zahi Hawass, to a year in jail and ordered him removed from his job, Ahram Online, the English language Web site of the Egyptian state newspaper, reported. The sentence arose out of a dispute over the assigning of a contract to run a gift shop at the Egyptian museum, said Farid Atiya, who sued Mr. Hawass in that dispute. - KATE TAYLOR
